A year after New York City entered lockdown, COVID-19 had claimed more than 30,000 lives. The scale of the tragedy makes it hard to grasp the personal grief behind it — the countless losses of friends, livelihoods, neighborhood landmarks, and a sense of belonging. Rather than proposing a single permanent memorial, Curbed Magazine asked New Yorkers which pandemic moments stayed with them and how they might be remembered.
Architects and artists then transformed those memories into proposals for temporary public installations, with no limits on budget or format — from sculptures and murals to pavilions or songs. This is one of 15 concepts created by architects, designers, artists, and composers.
