HORIZONTAL CITY

New York, USA

Type: Visualization

Company: MODU (Architectural firm)

Service: Graphic Design

The Horizontal City research focuses on New York City’s “public floor”—its sidewalks and open spaces—rather than its skyline. Using open urban data and visualization, the language of color and hatches becomes a tapestry that explores microclimates and everyday social interactions across the city’s 12,000 miles of sidewalks, which connect private and public realms. These spaces experience changing environmental conditions, especially in shaded areas, and host small urban infrastructures like kiosks and dining sheds that encourage social life. Together, they form an “ephemeral city” that offers insights for people-centered urban design and planning. Work is published in the Book Field Guide for Indoor Urbanism by MODU.
